On the evening of 23 April 2020, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the fourth extension of the Movement Control Order (MCO) which is expected to end on 12 May 2020. The current extension (third) will end on 28 April 2020. During this period, the Government will assess and monitor the latest data and information provided by the Ministry of Health to determine the next steps and consider easing the restrictions spelled out in the MCO in stages as the number of new cases continues to decrease.

The Government is also studying methods to revive the country’s economy in stages, including drafting a comprehensive Economic Recovery Plan for the short, medium and long term. This includes identifying measures and initiatives that will stimulate short and medium-term economic growth while encouraging the confidence of the people and investors to revitalise the country. These initiatives will be focused towards building the capacity and skills of the people, promoting domestic spending, enhancing the resilience of industries including SMEs and fostering a more positive investment environment.

With the possibility of the MCO being extended further, the Government has also agreed that selected sectors will be allowed to operate, subject to compliance with health guidelines that ensure the safety of workers, social security and workplace hygiene.

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) will continue to comply with the MCO and all related Government directives, including the closure of all our office premises.  All events are postponed until further notice and our staff will continue to work from home during this time.

MIA has taken several new, innovative initiatives to adapt to this new norm and continues to communicate and collaborate virtually with our staff, members and diverse stakeholders through various channels.  This includes complimentary webinar sessions for its members, covering a wide range of topics that will help its staff, members and stakeholders navigate these challenging times. A list of these webinars is available here.

Regular updates are being made to MIA’s dedicated COVID-19 webpage, which provides a one-stop access to essential resources, updates and guidance, including relevant information pertinent to our members and stakeholders.

We trust that these webinar sessions and the resources available on the COVID-19 webpage will help equip our members and stakeholders with the critical information needed to adapt in this new normal and continue on our collective efforts to build the nation.

We would also like to invite you to sign up to our Telegram channel, available here: MIA Telegram Broadcast (Official) channel.
